Finch Paper Relies on HP Indigo to Print Landmark Education Guide on Digital Printing

Given the tremendous, rapid growth of digital printing; designers and production professionals have been forced to quickly learn entirely new methods when designing and preparing files for digital printing. Finch Paper, in collaboration with Printing Industries of America’s senior research analyst, Joe Marin, fills this knowledge gap with the industry’s first comprehensive handbook on the topic, the Finch Digital Field Guide: Design Considerations for Digital Printing. A thorough search for a printer that could handle the complex printing requirements for the Guide led Finch to CDS Publications, a Consolidated Graphics (CGX) company whose stable of presses includes 12 HP Indigo presses.

Page by Page Production Changes

The Finch Digital Field Guide… not only covers different printing methods and applications in their entirety, it is comprised of pages produced with the range of substrates, printing technologies, and the ink or toners described.

“We wanted to make believers out of the design community,” says Beth Povie, Director, Branding & Communications for Finch Paper. “We relied on the impressive quality of the HP Indigo press for most of the pages. CGX was able to produce an excellent side-by-side comparison using several digital platforms, including the HP T-300 inkjet web along with offset lithography.

“CGX was a perfect partner for what Finch considers to be one of the most important educational Guides in our history,” Povie says, explaining that the Guide’s content, both in terms of educational lessons as well as samples, is unprecedented. Finch and CDS Publications are underway with a cross-media campaign, offering printers a customized version of the Digital Field Guide to use as their own marketing tool.

A Look Inside:

The guidebook frames its practical content at the outset with brief, but to the point, explanations of different processes and technologies, as well as a two–page spread dedicated to showing data-supported growth projections for digital printing.

From actual, comparable, samples of different printing techniques (i.e., offset lithography, dry toner, HP Indigo, and production inkjet); to spot color business card samples from HP Indigo, Nexpress, and the Konica Minolta bizhub; through to dozens of tips (again, with real samples) such as the use of Rich Blacks on different systems; the Digital Field Guide will prove an indispensable resource for creatives and production professionals.
